What were the most important questions to be answered for me before starting to learn a language or continue to learn it after reaching the level, I aimed to reach before it?
Let's see:
1) Why to learn that language? What to do with it?
Being able to answer this question might be vital for you, as well, to make a succes of language learning. It does not matter what your aim is: getting a better job, working in multinational environment, being in love, or simly you are interested in it, etc.
2) What special interest do you have to learn it?
In case your response for question 1 is, say, your carreer, it might not be enough to help you further when you fed up with learning.
3) What is the best method for you to learn languages?
In case you are aware of this method, you are a lucky guy and take the best care never to forget to apply this.
If you don't know, test as much methods as you can. Don't think of too complicated methods, say, visit several language schools that apply different methods to teach, listen to CDs, watch DVDs, read everything you can and are interested in, play language games, etc.
4) Are you aware of the best tools suit to your method that might make it possible for you to be succesful? If yes, what are they?
Teacher or tutor, reference books, dictionaries, exercise books etc.
Please note, the best tools might differ from each other at different levels of learning!
Say, at intermediate level you might find reference books are the most helpful, than you find at advance level that dictionaries are more beneficial.
For me the first bigger stage is when I feel it's time to consult with, say, English-English (more serious) dictionaries /or dictionary of any other language/ - somewhere between intermediate and advance level (according to the general levels).
The second stage is when books for foreign language learners are no more able to give response. Only grammar books for native speakers.
5) When to start to learn?
It is just like starting a diet.
NOW to start, not tomorrow (or not after dinner)!
6) Are you motivated enough (whatever you are motivated by)?
If not (go back again to question 1 ), you will learn the language you have chosen, but might be you won't know it and will not be able to use it.
(Hope the best.)
Well, that's for today! I might go on listing, who knows. But I think I could describe the most important things.
Good luck to you!!!
